Developed after a yearlong process of community engagement, Campus Plan 2050 was released in the fall of 2024. The plan outlines proposed changes to the Ann Arbor campus over the next 25 years and reflects the diverse ideas and aspirations of the university community.

The initiative aligns closely with Vision 2034, the university’s 10-year plan focused on transformative impact in four key areas: Life-Changing Education; Human Health and Well-Being; Democracy, Civic and Global Engagement; and Climate Action, Sustainability and Environmental Justice.

A commitment to sustainability is at the core of the plan, which proposes innovative infrastructure solutions, including geo-exchange systems, building retrofits that enhance energy efficiency and on-campus solar installations. An optimized transit system calls for an elevated guideway and a high-efficiency, high-capacity bus rapid transit system that would connect all five Ann Arbor campuses, reducing congestion and supporting the university’s carbon neutrality goals.

Among other potential changes, Campus Plan 2050 envisions an on-campus hotel and conference center, located near the North Campus Innovation District; a pedestrian bridge for fans to get from Ferry Field to Michigan Stadium, along with a new dedicated TV fan zone; and expansion of on-campus housing including the Central Campus Residential Development currently under construction. Campus Plan 2050 “reflects our dedication to not only meeting today’s challenges, but also investing wisely in the necessities and opportunities of tomorrow,” said President Santa J. Ono.
